The introduction is not one document

Each of the three discs carries its own introduction, and they differ — in length, in wording, and in what they say. The 2006 disc added pages the 2001 disc did not have and changed the editorial policy on vagrant species; the 2011 disc dropped five corrections the 2006 disc carried. This site reads the Disc 1 · 2011 text by default; each page offers the other discs' wording where it differs. How the three compare, page by page, is set out under Sources and method.

Each disc also carries pages of instructions for the original Windows program. Those are preserved in this project's historical record but are not published here: this website does not reproduce that software, and its instructions would not help you use this site.
