About
The original CD-ROM
The work was planned as three discs and published out of order, over ten years. This page collects what the discs themselves say about that.
The title plate
The work's title plate: a painted plate of five birds with the title set across the top. 419x406 px, byte-identical on all three discs.
A painted plate of five birds under the work's title, in red serif capitals. It is byte-for-byte identical on all three discs — the one piece of the work that never changed — and it had never been published anywhere until this edition.
The image the original program showed while starting. 442x327 px, byte-identical on Disc 2 and Disc 3.
Three discs, published out of order
Disc 2 came first, in 2001, because the sub-oscine passerines it covered are where the region's endemic birds are concentrated. Disc 3 followed in 2006, and Disc 1 — the non-passerines — completed the set in 2011. The work explains the choice itself, on the second page of its own introduction:
Order of Publication · Disc 2 · 2001
Disc 2 was selected to be the first disc published because of the predominance of endemic and near-endemic species of Sub-oscines found in the area covered. It is expected that the second disc to be published will be Disc 3, followed by Disc 1.
Quoted from Organization, the Disc 2 · 2001 release. By 2006 the same passage reads “The second disc to be published is Disc 3, to be followed ultimately by Disc 1.”
| Disc | Introduction pages | Bibliography records | Errata |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc 2 · 2001 | 15 | 117 | none |
| Disc 3 · 2006 | 18 | 186 | yes |
| Disc 1 · 2011 | 18 | 201 | yes |

Data Installation for
The Land Birds of Southeast Brazil
---------------------------------------------------------
This is one disc of a multiple set, although all discs are not being
published at the same time. The total amount of data (pictures, songs, videos, text)
will take up a sizeable amount of many hard discs. If you do not want to load all
the data on to your hard disc you can select the option to load only some of the
data when the Install program runs. Most of the data volume is used up by song
files and (depending on the disc) by video files; the picture files take up only
a small amount of room so you should always load them. Text and maps are loaded
automatically at installation (there are no range maps in this product - only
location maps).
The Setup program normally installs everything in:
\Program Files\GGS\The Land Birds of Southeast Brazil
When you run the Setup program the last screen gives you two options, neither of which is
checked:
1. Yes, I want to view README file (this file).
2. Yes, launch the Program File.
You must check option #2 to run the Install program. If you click Finish without checking
this option then the Data Installion will not have been completed. In this case you can either:
a) re-run the Setup program or,
b) start the main program - click 'Start - Programs - The Birder's Notebook - The Land Birds of Southeast Brazil'. The program will detect that the data installation was not finished and run it again for you.
The Data Installation dialog gives you three options:
1. Load all of the data on to your hard disk.
2. Load some of the data (you can choose which).
3. Use the default installation (pictures, maps on the hard disc; songs & videos on the CD).
Advanced users please note the following:
when data is not stored in the default folders on the hard disc, links are used to define
where the data is. You can change these links. However, running the Data Installation program
for any new disc will cause the links to be reset. After running the Install program, you can always
copy data directly from the CD to the location of your choice and reset the directory links yourself. It is strongly recommended that data not be mixed - i.e. picture, sound and video files should not be combined in the same folder, nor should these files be mixed with other similar files in the same folder. This will make things easier should you subsequently purchase The Birder's Notebook, which allows you to use multiple Multimedia Checklists covering any part of the world as well as develop your own.
This product is intended to be used with Windows Display settings of at least High Color(16bit)
and 800x600 pixels resolution. The preferred setting is 1024x768. The program will produce less
satisfactory results at lesser settings.
Compressed Videos:
There are a few videos that accompany this disc. They are videos compressed using Microsoft Video Codec 2 and will not play on machines that do not have the appropriate driver. Since this driver comes with Windows Media Player Version 7.0 and better if you have a machine with this then the videos will play. Alternatively you can download Windows Media Player Version 7.0 from the Microsoft website.
Refer to the on-line Help Index for more information.

Disc note (2011)
The note accompanying the final disc of the set.
This disc contains the final set of pictures and sound files to complete The Land Birds of Southeast Brazil 3 disc set. To install this disc on Windows XP machines and earlier, put the disc into a CD drive, wait for the install prompt to display then click 'Install'. Installation places the software in the folder c:\program files\GGS\SEBrazil. At the completion of the installation process be sure to check the 'Yes, launch the Program File' box. This will bring up a dialog box which will let you offload the files of your choice from the disc to the appropriate folders (Picture or WAV). When installing multiple discs, note that the installation order for the 3 discs must always FINISH with this disc. For machines that do not run the old installation procedures (Vista and above) there is a folder called 'SEBrazil' on the disc (this disc only) which contains the entire installation except the Picure and Sound files. This can be copied to any location on your machine. You then need to manually copy the Picture and Sound files from the folders Wbird\Picture and Wbird\WAV (for all 3 discs). There is also a folder on the Disc call Disc2_Picture_Replacements. This contains the picture files the were on Disc2 corrected for the white sheen that occured with some of them.

What is not published here
Each disc also carried pages of instructions for operating its Windows program — which menu opened the species list, how to drag the divider beside a picture, how to calibrate the screen so a bird displayed at life size. There are 2 on Disc 2 · 2001, 3 on Disc 3 · 2006, 3 on Disc 1 · 2011.
They are not published on this site, because they describe software
this site does not reproduce. They are preserved in full in this project's historical
record, in recovered-front-matter-release-aware-v0.1, together with the
program's compiled help file — whose internal structure has never been decoded — and
its configuration files. Leaving them off the website is a decision about what belongs
on a modern website. Nothing has been discarded.
About the pictures on this site
The discs stored several of their images as uncompressed bitmaps — the area map alone is two megabytes for a single picture. Where that would make a page slow, this site serves a modern rendering generated from the preserved original at build time. The original bytes are never altered, and where the original is published it remains available as the fallback.
