19 cm. Larger than /Lepidocolaptes fuscus . Bill long, somewhat decurved, flesh-colored. Crown brownish, striped beige. An indication of a whitish superciliary. Back, wings and tail rufous without spots. Throat whitish unstriped, the sides of neck with whitish streaks. Chest and belly dark brown with white streaks that have black borders. Single call similar to preceding species | "tshirrr" or "pitshirr". Also a "pidu pidu" etc. Song a descending "pi pi pi pi pi pi pi" or "pi pi pi pui pui zizizizizi". Some songs have a remote resemblance with the song of /Dysithamnus xanthopterus consult ^101 . Scales trees, mainly foraging in the canopy. Nests in tree holes and occasionally in buildings ^30 . Uncommon in primary and secondary forests. Found at higher altitudes 800-1400 meters in the Serra Mantiqueira. Unlike the preceding species not so much found in open areas. Throughout, up to 1600 meters. Description Disc 1 (2011)

Differs from /Lepidocolaptes falcinellus almost no overlap by weaker supercilium, weaker and less extensive crown streaking, whiter underparts, paler crown and upperparts. Also similar to /Xiphorhynchus fuscus , but larger, pale markings are more white streaking of underparts have black borders and back is unmarked.

Taxonomy notes Disc 1 (2011)

/Lepidocolaptes falcinellus , Scalloped Woodcreeper, Southern Estado Sao Paulo to South bank of Rio Paraiba do Sul and North side of Serra Mantiqueira is considered to be a good species and differs from /Lepidocolaptes squamatus by broader buff-white crown streaks that cover also the neck area as well and more conspicuous supercilium ^196 . However hybrids exist in Southern Minas Gerais ^197 , which bring up the question, whether the two taxa are indeed full species.
