Description Disc 1 · 2011
33 - 41 cm. The adult is a variable, medium sized, thickset buteo with a) upper side, head and upper breast gray or grayish brown or, b) head, throat and upperparts dark brown or blackish, upper breast cinnamaon or tawny rufous, usually faintly mottled or striped; primaries and secondaries in both colour types rufous above with narrow dusky barring; tips of flight feathers blackish; tail gray, grayish brown or rufous with four to five broad black bars; lower breast and belly white or beige coloured, barred cinnamon brown or rufous; iris yellow to orange red; cere yellow or dull orange; bill black, the base of the mandible greenish yellow; feet yellow to dull orange.
The immature resembles the adult, but the upperside is more heavily streaked white or buff; throat white, heavily streaked with fuscous; upper breast creamy white of buffy, broadly striped with fuscous, cinnamon or russet.
