20 cm. A common large and strongly streaked tyrant flycatcher of woodlands. Bill large, the mandible with a flesh-colored base. Head streaked with a yellow semiconcealed coronal patch and a white superciliary stripe. Ear coverts and eye stripe starting above bill blackish. A white malar streak paralleled by a grayish stripe below. Above brownish, streaked darker, the rump and tail rufous-brown. Wings blackish with rufous edging to the flight feathers. Whitish below, becoming pale yellow on belly, and broadly streaked dusky. Most frequent calls are a "hi-chup" and a sharp "zick...zick..." or, "zwei....zwe-i". A pair suddenly utters together a chattering series of hard calls, see cut 5 and also cut 5 of /Legatus leucophaius . A frequently uttered call at dawn or dusk is a repeated "twi-twe-tle" with emphasis on the first syllable. Perches in the upper and middle stratum of forest trees. Performs aerial hawks and mostly upward strikes from a perch within the canopy. Also frugivorous. Nest is in crevices of trees ^44 .
