The account

Description

23 cm. Similar to Pitangus sulphuratus but with proportionally much larger bill, much less conspicuous behavior and more of a forest bird. Semiconcealed coronal patch and white superciliary stripe. Olive-brown above, with less rufous edging of flight and tail feathers. Throat white. Breast and belly yellow.

The juvenile has more rufous edging on flight and tail feathers.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The most common call is a low harsh 'rearearearea' often combined with a high fast rattle reminiscent of the call of Myiarchus ferox, but higher, like 'wiwiwirrr'. Also a 'kikirrr-ek' or 'kerrr-ek' in sequences. Dawn song is a repeated call consisting of three syllables (see sound track # 6).

Behavior

Perches usually in the upper stratum of tall trees, performing aerial hawks and upward strikes.

Breeding

Builds a cup nest (⁴⁴).

Regularly encountered in a variety of habitats from dense secondary to primary rainforest and edge to more open woodland and borders.

Throughout. Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Orgãos, Fazenda Intervales, Itapiranga, Iguape, Cananeia, Ilha do Cardoso etc. Up to 1300 meters.
