White-crested Elaenia

14 cm. A medium size nondescript olive elaenia indistinguishable in the field from /Elaenia parvirostris . Slightly crested with the white coronal stripe often obvious. White eye-ring. Above olive. Blackish wings with two white bars. Below whitish-grey, the belly lighter. Calls repeatedly "wiu wiu...." cut 1 . Song is a repeated "tshi-burrr.... tshi-burrr" cut 2 considered to be similar to the call of /Elaenia parvirostris by Ridgely ^76 . <NWintering birds are reported to be mostly silent ^76 . Song, a three syllabled "tchi tchi wi" or "rewi tchi w<CE>", is probably not frequently heard on migration. There is also a burry one syllable vocalization reminiscent of /Elaenia flavogaster , "wiurrrr" listen to ^38 . An upward-hover gleaner and perch gleaner ^74 . A uncommon migrant from the south Serra do Mar and Rio de Janeiro . Found in open country and forest edge, shrubs and low bush forest. To be expected throughout the area. 643 Call. Cornell Cat 42279.
