Buff flanks. Tail gray, the feathers with white tips. <NFemale is like the male, but has dark streaks on white below. Flanks buff.
The song is a rapidly repeated "tshitshitshi...", a long run-together "chchchchchch" ^76 .
Forages low in scrub.
Scrubby thickets and gallery forests. Bushy cerrado in the interior.
Extralimital in northern Estado S<C4>o Paulo Franca, Bebedouro, S<C4>o Jeronimo ^40 . Has spread into deforested areas of Espirito Santo ^44 . Might be expected to occur in suitable habitat closer to the shore.
The resemblance of the song presented here at least at the end of the cut with the pair song of /Cypsnagra hirundinacea , a tanager occurring in the same Cerrado habitat, brings up the question whether this song belongs to /Formicivora rufa . However F. rufa was identified by sight singing when this vocalization was recorded.
