The account

Description

13 cm. Male has a rufous crown and back and a white superciliary. Black wings with two white wing bars. Below black with white sides of the neck, chest and belly merging with the white superciliary. Buff flanks. Tail gray, the feathers with white tips.

Female is like the male, but has dark streaks on white below. Flanks buff.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The song is a rapidly repeated 'tshitshitshi...', a long run-together 'chchchchchch' (⁷⁶).

Behavior

Forages low in scrub.

Habitat and status

Scrubby thickets and gallery forests. Bushy cerrado in the interior.

Distribution

Extralimital in northern Estado São Paulo (Franca, Bebedouro, São Jeronimo (⁴⁰). Has spread into deforested areas of Espirito Santo (⁴⁴). Might be expected to occur in suitable habitat closer to the shore.

Taxonomy notes

The resemblance of the song presented here at least at the end of the cut with the pair song of Cypsnagra hirundinacea, a tanager occurring in the same Cerrado habitat, brings up the question whether this song belongs to Formicivora rufa. However F. rufa was identified by sight singing when this vocalization was recorded.
