9 cm. Male dark gray with a black bib reaching down to the chest. Blackish wings with 2 white wing bars. Crissum grey, finely barred black. Tail black with a white terminal band. <NThe female is unique among southeast Brazilian antwrens in having a gray crown, otherwise a light brownish-olive-gray above. Wings dusky-gray with two buff bars. Throat white. Below light buff. Tail feathers dusky-brown with rusty edges and a beige terminal band. Call a "cleek" or "deeet". Also "tjet tjet" and a descending "dje dje dje dja" song . <NAccording to Whitney and Pacheco the species has a complex song consisting of two sections. The beginning consists of 4-6 descending whistles ending with a sharper syllable, after 0.25 sec the second section starts which consists of only 3-4 whistles, descends more rapidly and lacks the terminal sharper syllable. Moves rapidly through trees and bushes from close to the ground to canopy level, usually in the 2-8 meters range, most often in the 4-5 meters range. Forages in mixed species groups e.g. /Lepidocolaptes fuscus, Philydor atricapillus, Hypoedaleus guttatus, Drymophila squamata, Dysithamnus stictothorax, Dysithamnus mentalis, Terenura maculata ^58 .<N Tobias et al. note that there might be niche overlap with other Myrmotherula species, because /Myrmotherula minor is never found in company of /Myrmotherula unicolor , for example ^59 . Occurs at low density in the interior of primary or old secondary mossy humid rainforest and old banana plantations with plenty of epiphytes and lianas. Almost always near either standing or flowing water, usually not higher than 300 meters ^60 . Its distribution has certainly been drastically reduced and fragmented by habitat loss. Endemic to the Serra do Mar near<8E>Ubatuba<8E>and<8E>Parati<8E>and in the <8E>Serra Bocaina<8E>. An isolated population near Peruibe in<8E>Jureia<8E>. To 500 meters.
