The account

Description

15 cm. Smaller and shorter billed than Dendrocincla turdina. Head, neck and underparts ochraceous olive, brightest on throat, chest and belly. Cheeks and top of head darker, more like back. Wings and tail rufous.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Easily identified by its 8-12 upturned 'weeist-weeist-weeist......' notes (vocalization # 5) or single 'wik" and 'weest' calls (vocalizations # 1, 3 and 4). Also a fast trilled roll 't-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t....' lasting some times for minutes (Cut #2). This call has a definite Scytalopus quality. A similar even faster Scytalopus-like trill was also recorded in Bolivia (³⁸) and is described from western Ecuador (⁴⁴). A accelerating and decelerating series of 'tiuk' or 'tchick' calls, frequently going on for minutes. (vocalization # 6). It should be pointed out that the recorded calls of Sittasomus griseicapillus from Amazonia (³⁶, ³⁷, ³⁸) are different from the calls given by sylviellus from Southeast Brazil. The trilled roll call and 'weest' calls are also heard on ¹¹³.

Behavior

Scaling trees and bushes. In the spring months quite vocal, especially in the early morning. Does not appear to follow army ants.

Habitat and status

Quite regularly encountered in primary and secondary forest.

Throughout, sea level to 1700 meters in the-Serra Mantiqueira-.

Taxonomy notes

The subspecies sylviellus from Southeast Brazil might be a distinct species (⁷⁶).
