Thrush-like Woodcreeper

19-21cm. A stocky woodcreeper of humid mature forest. With a medium length, almost straight, strong bill. Uniformly dark brown, unstreaked with exception of the crown which is faintly streaked lighter. Tail rufous-brown. A more or less lengthy series of "kip" notes growing softer and the sequence slower and then starts increasing again in volume and speed, sometimes going on for several minutes. A recording of the vocalization is also on ^36 by J.D. Frisch, labeled /Dendrocincla fuliginosa . Within forest, scaling trees, usually foraging rather high, sometimes following army ant swarms. Fairly regular in the interior of mature secondary or of primary rain forest, rarely in forest edge or open areas. Does not seem to be an obligate ant follower. Throughout Formerly considered conspecific with /Dendrocincla fuliginosa ^34 . E. O. Willis presented evidence for its being a separate species ^35 . The calls of /Dendrocincla turdina are clearly different from the fast rattles of /Dendrocincla fuliginosa from Venezuela, Bolivia and Costa Rica ^36, ^37, ^38 and strongly resemble the vocalizations of the subtropical /Dendrocincla tyrannina ^39 . 15792 Song.
