The account

Description

19-21cm. A stocky woodcreeper of humid mature forest. With a medium length, almost straight, strong bill. Uniformly dark brown, unstreaked with exception of the crown which is faintly streaked lighter. Tail rufous-brown.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

A more or less lengthy series of 'kip' notes growing softer and the sequence slower and then starts increasing again in volume and speed, sometimes going on for several minutes. A recording of the vocalization is also on ³⁶ by J.D. Frisch, labeled Dendrocincla fuliginosa.

Behavior

Within forest, scaling trees, usually foraging rather high, sometimes following army ant swarms.

Habitat and status

Fairly regular in the interior of mature secondary or of primary rain forest, rarely in forest edge or open areas. Does not seem to be an obligate ant follower.

Taxonomy notes

Formerly considered conspecific with Dendrocincla fuliginosa (³⁴). E. O. Willis presented evidence for its being a separate species (³⁵). The calls of Dendrocincla turdina are clearly different from the fast rattles of Dendrocincla fuliginosa from Venezuela, Bolivia and Costa Rica (³⁶, ³⁷, ³⁸) and strongly resemble the vocalizations of the subtropical Dendrocincla tyrannina (³⁹).
