The account

Description

16 cm. The bill does not appear upturned. Tawny-brown unstriped above, more rufous on the rump. Dark brown ear coverts and crown with a striking broad white superciliary stripe. Whitish buff throat becoming olive-brown below with buff streaks invading the olive-brown chest. Rufous tail.

This species is not as chunky as syndactyla rufosuperciliata and has a longer longer tail.

Where it was recorded

The discs' own checklists select White-browed Foliage-gleaner at 12 localities.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song a high and loud 'tik tik tik titititititi'.

Behavior

Low in dense humid forest. At Itatiaia National Park I observed this species during a foraging activity lasting for about 4 min examining nothing else but branches with dead leaves in the understory of secondary rain forest (see ⁴⁴).

Uncommon, in humid secondary and primary rain forest

Distribution

Throughout the area (Serra dos Orgãos, Serra Mantiqueira, Boraceia (¹⁵), Iguape(⁴⁰)). Primarily at higher elevations, up to 1500 meters. I have never seen it at sea level.

Taxonomy notes

In vocalization # 3 Philydor rufus cannot be excluded as a source for this call, although it was not seen.
