17 cm. The bill appears a little bit upturned because the upper mandible is straight. Above olive-brown, the sides of the head with buffy spots and the side of neck with buffy stripes. A narrow buff eye stripe. Throat white or buffy. Below olive-brown with strong buffy streaks. Tail chestnut-brown. <NJuveniles are more spotted than streaked. Call a repeated "zeek zeek" or a "zriik". The characteristic song is a series of 25 to 30 "tuk tuk tuk zikzikzikzikzik......." notes which start slow and sometimes increase in pitch. Forages from ground to 4 meters in dense humid primary and secondary forest. Hammers on twigs. Frequent in mixed flocks. Nests in tree cavities ^30 .
