The account

Description

6.7". Bill longer than in philydor lichtensteini. Crown dark grayish with the whole front and superciliary which joins the frontal band markedly ochraceous-buff. Lores and streak through eye dark grayish-brown. Above cinnamon-olivaceous-brown, the back more ochraceous. Below ochraceous-orange. Wings chestnut red, the axillaries and underwing coverts ochraceous-orange. Tail dark cinnamon reddish-brown, darker on the central rectrices.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

a sequence of sharp high 'kik' sounds sometimes ascending. Also single calls sounding like 'tchree'.

Behavior

In the canopy and subcanopy of the forest, forages near the tip of branches inspecting foliage often climbing around upside-down in tit-like manner.

Breeding

The nest is apparently some times in a tree cavity or at the end of a burrow in a bank of earth (⁴⁴, ⁴¹).

Habitat and status

Relatively common in most humid primary and secondary rain forests and borders. Also inland in dryer habitat. In pairs and in mixed flocks.

Throughout the area, up to 1500 meters.
