18-21 cm. The male has a bright red crown, extending from the forehead to the nape. Lores, area around the eye, ear coverts and posterior neck sides, olive-green. A yellow stripe extends from the lower lores to the hind neck. A short red malar stripe bordered below by an olive-green stripe. Yellow chin and upper throat. Upper parts olive-green. Wings and tail dark olive-brown. Underparts pale yellow, barred olive. Underwing cinnamon. Bill dark gray. Iris white. <NThe female has a greenish crown striped with yellow: A "sheeerr" irregularly spaced like /Piculus flavigula , a short rattle "ki-errrrr" vocalization 1 . Singly, in pairs or in mixed flocks forages high in the subcanopy. Gleaning seems to be a common feeding technique ^131 . In Argentina in September.
