20 cm. The male has a red crown, extending from the forehead to the nape, yellow lores, and in SE-Brazil race erythropis a red chin and throat. The rest of the head is bright golden yellow. Upperparts yellowish green, brighter on the mantle and back. Flight feathers brownish-black with cinnamon patches on the inner webs. Upper tail blackish, edged greenish. Below green with lighter green barring becoming yellow on the belly and crissum. <NThe female has only the nape and a small area of moustachial stripe red. "shreer", given at uneven intervals, rattle "kee" in series 6 -8 sec long, slowing towards end ^129 . Singly, in pairs or in mixed flocks, forages from the middle level of trees up to the canopy. August-December. Not uncommon in humid rain forest, flooded gallery forests and forest edge. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo occurs mostly inland. At the coast observed at<8E>Bertioga, Guarau, Icapara, Sete Barras, Guaratuba, Cananeia ^119 , Peruibe, Picinguaba Remold, unpubl. . No information from coastal Estado Rio de Janeiro ^40 .
