20 cm. The male has a red crown, extending from the forehead to the nape, yellow lores, and in SE-Brazil race erythropis a red chin and throat. The rest of the head is bright golden yellow. Upperparts yellowish green, brighter on the mantle and back. Flight feathers brownish-black with cinnamon patches on the inner webs. Upper tail blackish, edged greenish. Below green with lighter green barring becoming yellow on the belly and crissum. <NThe female has only the nape and a small area of moustachial stripe red. "shreer", given at uneven intervals, rattle "kee" in series 6 -8 sec long, slowing towards end ^129 . Singly, in pairs or in mixed flocks, forages from the middle level of trees up to the canopy.
