Description Disc 1 (2011)

14-16 cm. A large hummingbird with a heavy, straight bill, hooked at the tip: maxilla black, mandible yellow: above dark coppery olive, the feathers with a dusky subterminal band and pale fringe: postocular streak buff: throat and sides of neck tawny ochraceous with dark streak down center: rest of the underparts buff, heavily streaked with black: central four tail feathers dark bronzy purple, the rest with purple black bases and broad tawny tips.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

A trap-lining flower visitor, visits long-tubed flowers with year-round blooming, especially epiphytes. Goes into scrubby forest border areas to sing, goes back into dense forest to feed.

Common in the understory of humid forest, forest edge, secondary forest, Sea level to 500 meters.

Distribution Disc 1 (2011)

Forested areas of the litoral. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo reported from <8E>Bertioga, Guarau, Pariquera acu, Icapara, Sete Barras, Cananeia, Iguape, Guaratuba, Ubatumirim, Sertao das Cotias ^119 .
