16 cm. A common large and long tailed antbird. Eye dark red. <NMale is glossy black with a semiconcealed white dorsal patch. Tips of wing coverts and bend of wing white forming wingbars. <NFemale is rufous-brown. Below lighter brown-beige. Tail black. Song, a typical voice of the forest of southeast Brazil, is a descending whistle "weer weer weer weer weer weer". Calls are a high pitched and fast snickering "titititititi", somewhat descending, and a typical loud single "tchik ... tchik". A bird of the undergrowth of forest and secondary scrub, but always close to forest. Common in primary and secondary forest and edge, open swamp forest and restinga. Throughout.
