Description Disc 1 (2011)

75-90 cm. Unmistakable, due to the prominent shaggy crest on the forehead, red bill and salmon-colored legs. Above light ashy brown, darkest on the crown, back, and middle rectrices, feathers finely vermiculated buff: inner webs of flight feathers boldly barred white: other tail feathers broadly tipped white and with a black subtermial bar: below cinereous tinged buff, neck and breast with fine white streaks broadening on the sides and upper abdomen: belly and crissum white: iris yellow: bill bright red: tarsi reddish.

In the morning the song starts with 2-6 ascending cleep..cleep..cleep.. and up to 13 descending claup..claup..claup . Sometimes omits the descending claup series.

Behavior Disc 1 (2011)

Feeds alone or in pairs or small family parties by walking slowly and searching for prey arthropods, lizzards, small rodents, fruits on the ground or low in vegetation.

Common in open dry woodland, scrub, savannah, ranchland, hilly grassland, caatinga, cerrado, cerradao.

Throughout, but lacking in the litoral. In Estado S<C4>o Paulo occurs from ^500 - 2000 meters the high mountain grass land of the <8E>Serra Mantiqueira :
