Description Disc 1 · 2011
24.0-29.0 cm. Difficult to distinguish from the more massive falco deiroleucus - more slender, more hobby-like. The adult has sides of head and upperparts black, the feathers of back, wing coverts, rump and tail coverts broadly edged with slate gray; primaries with white elliptical spots or narrow bars on the inner webs; tail narrowly tipped white and with several narrow white or gray bands; throat to chest and crescent on side of the neck variably buff or cinnamon; breast, abdomen and sides black, narrowly barred with white; lower belly, tibiae and under tail coverts chestnut rufous; iris dark brown; eyelids and cere bright yellow; bill black, gray at base; feet yellow.
The immature is similar to the adult but the throat is buffier and the feathers of the upperparts are without bluish-slate margins.
