Lesser Grass-Finch

18 cm. Appears smaller and slimmer than /Emberizoides herbicola . The plumage is similar, however the face, lores and ear covers are dark gray, grizzled whitish. Whitish narrow eye ring. The throat and the underparts are whiter than that of /Emberizoides herbicola . Belly, flanks and crissum darker than these of /Emberizoides herbicola and streaked blackish-brown. In contrast to /Emberizoides herbicola upper tail covers and rump are dark olive and streaked blackish. Mantle greener and black streaks broader than in /Emberizoides herbicola giving the impression of a darker upper side. Song a harsh chatter "che che che che che che-.." This Grass-Finch is more of a skulker than /Emberizoides herbicola , foraging in high marsh grass and bushes. Does not cock tail in flight ^165 . Rare and probably overlooked. Is found in wetter habitat than /Emberizoides herbicola , in swampy meadows and open marshes with low bushes. Inland Estado S<C4>o Paulo.
