14.5-16.5 cm. Bill conical, extremely thick, whitish in male, black in female. Male black: underwing covers white: white wing speculum. Female brown above: buffy below. Call "tchoc" ^119 . The songs included here are from Bolivia and are quite different from each other. The first song containing some gurgling notes and whistles recalls the song of /Dolichonyx oryzivorus . I have no information about the song of the nominate race from Southeast Brazil. Forages in trees and shrubs. Extinct in Southeast Brazil due to the activity of bird trappers. Was found in scrubby pastures with trees, forest border, shorelines of lakes and rivers, bushy marshland. Was apparently found throughout Estado Rio de Janeiro and Estado S<C4>o Paulo. Historical records are extralimital, e.g<8E>Franca.
