17-18 cm. Conical bill flesh-colored or yellow. The Non-breeding male and female are buffy brown above with darker streaks. Head striped dark gray and buff. Underparts yellowish-buff, streaked dark brown on the flanks. <NJuveniles have a darker head. <NMales in worn plumage are mostly black with a straw-colored nuchal collar, white scapulars and rump. In fresh plumage this pattern is largely obscured by the buffy tips of the feathers which wear off during migration to the breeding areas. Freshly molted males have therefore a dark brown head and underside, the underside with narrow dark buffy bands. Neck and upper side lighter beige brown. Wings light brownish with light buffy wing coverts, and a beige wing band. Calls a loud "chack" and a "ree-yew", repeated Vocalization 1 . Vocalization 2 features the beta-song 43 s, probably not delivered in Brazil ^167 , which starts with a repeated "pete pete" and continues with similar warbled notes that conclude also the longer 7.0 s alpha-song. Forages in grassy areas on the ground in small and large flocks. North America in May-July. An irregular transient in rice fields, marshes, tall grass meadows. Extralimital in Mato Grosso do Sul. There are no records from Estado S<C4>o Paulo, but it might occur as a straggler, because records exist from Estado Rio de Janeiro from<8E>Marambaia, Cabo Frio ^121 .
