11 cm. The male has a greenish yellow bill. Back gray with an olive tinge. Wings and tail dark brown-gray. Upper throat black, bordered on the sides by a white streak and below by a white cross band which is bordered by a black pectoral band. Underparts white. <NThe female has a dusky maxilla and a yellow mandible. Olive brown upperparts, lighter underparts becoming white on the belly. Call "zik". Song variable, about 7-12 notes building a strophe that is many times repeated see vocalizations 1-3 . Similar to the song of /Sporophila nigricollis . Forages on the ground or in scrub and bushes in pairs or groups. Common in open country with bushes, gardens, forest borders, swamps, gallery forest edge.
