13.5 cm. Male crown black with a semi-concealed scarlet coronal stripe. Eye-ring white. Upper parts wine-red to dark reddish-brown. Rump bright crimson. Underside light crimson. <NFemales lack the black and red in the crown. Throat whitish. Below light grayish-pink. Song indistinguishable from that of /Coryphospingus pileatus . Sometimes strophe consisting of three syllables vocalization 2 . Forages on the ground in small groups or pairs in the open, or below scrub and bushes. Widespread in dry bushy open areas with a few trees: farmland, brushy border and gallery forest. Is not attracted to human habitations or towns. From Estado Rio de Janeiro ^133 , but see Pinto ^40 who doubts that this species was found in Estado Rio de Janeiro.
