13 cm. Bill light gray. Male crown black with a semi-concealed scarlet coronal stripe. White eye ring and lores. Upperparts light gray. Underparts white, the breast with a grayish hue. <NThe female lacks the black and red on the crown. Song a "weet-chet weet-chet...." or "weet- chewit weet-chewit...." repeated numerous times. Forages in small groups, pairs or alone on the ground, frequently perches on bush or tree. Common in dry scrub and border of shrubby woodland. Reaches Estado Rio de Janeiro from the North.
