14.5-15.0 cm. Broad, flat and short bill. The male is turquoise-blue. Front, face and throat black. Center of belly white, the flanks with black barring. <NThe female is bright greenish with a gray mottled front, foreface and throat. Belly pale yellow with green barring on flanks. <NThe immature male is like the female, but has blue patches. Call a high pitched "tseep". Song a high pitched warble "wee chit wee chit wee chit". Forages in trees, high and low, in search for fruits, hovers to take berries, sometimes hawking for insects. Encountered usually in single species flocks. Nests in holes, Minas Gerais September, Mato Grosso October, November. Common in open woodland and forest borders, parkland and gallery forest. Throughout, to 1500 meters 11197 Calls.
