The account

Description

11 cm. Male is like Dacnis cayana, but has a black throat patch and black mantle and is smaller. Wing feathers black without blue edgings. Blackish legs and a clearly shorter tail.

The female has dark brown olive upperparts. Forehead, cheeks, rump, and scapulars blue green. Pale buff underside.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Forages in the canopy of large trees.

Habitat and status

Rare in primary and secondary forests and borders. Associated with forest and forest edge in spring and summer. Appears at low elevations at forest clearings and in second growth in flocks in winter.

Distribution

In Estado São Paulo observed at Ubatuba (Fazenda Capricornio], Paranapiacaba (¹⁶³), near São Paulo City, PE Jacupiranga, Cananeia, Ubatumirim, PE Carlos Botelho, Fazenda Intervales, on migration in Rio Claro (¹¹⁹). In Estado Rio de Janeiro recorded from Desengano State Park, Teresopolis, Petropolis, Tijuca National Park, Angra dos Reis, Itatiaia (¹²²), Nova Friburgo (⁴⁰), Mage (¹⁶³), the foothills of the Serra dos Orgãos below Petropolis (about 20 observed in August,David Willis, unpubl.).

The Red Data book (¹²²) lists this species as "vulnerable" because it is genuinely rare, occupies restricted range and suffers from bird trade.
