11 cm. Male is like /Dacnis cayana , but has a black throat patch and black mantle and is smaller. Wing feathers black without blue edgings. Blackish legs and a clearly shorter tail. <NThe female has dark brown olive upperparts. Forehead, cheeks, rump, and scapulars blue green. Pale buff underside.
Forages in the canopy of large trees.
Rare in primary and secondary forests and borders. Associated with forest and forest edge in spring and summer. Appears at low elevations at forest clearings and in second growth in flocks in winter.

In Estado Rio de Janeiro recorded from<8E>Desengano State Park, Teresopolis, Petropolis, Tijuca National Park, Angra dos Reis, Itatiaia ^122 , Nova Friburgo ^40 , Mage ^163 , the foothills of the<8E>Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>below<8E>Petropolis about 20 observed in August,David Willis, unpubl. . <NBelow 850 meters ^133 .
