Palm Tanager

17-18 cm. Olive gray, darker and suffused with violet on the back and underside. Forecrown light yellow-buff. Wing coverts light olive-green, the rest of wing black. In bad light can be distinguished from /Thraupis sayaca by the bicolored wing ^133 . Call a high pitched "sweeet . Song a sequence of about 10 high pitched whistles delivered within 3-4 sec, same strophe frequently repeated. Song similar to that of /Thraupis sayaca , but longer and more squeaky vocalization 2 . Forages in the tops of palms, in trees and in shrubs in pairs or small groups. Observed in Rio de Janeiro in October and November. Not uncommon in open areas with trees and palms, forest border, gardens, parks. Throughout the littoral but rare inland.
