16.5 cm. Uniformly light bluish gray, the tail and wing feather edgings turquoise blue. Sexes alike.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call a lower pitched "chup' and a higher pitched 'zit'. Song a high pitched assembly of melodious squeaks and whistles, the sequence frequently repeated.

Behavior

Usually forages in family groups in the canopy of trees, but descends to fruiting shrubs. In addition to all kind of fruits eats also buds and leaves of trees, including Eucalyptus flowers (¹²¹).

Breeding

September-January. Builds neat cup nest (⁹²).

Clearly the most common Thraupis tanager in the area. Found in open forest and second growth, near small wood lots, shrubby areas, gardens, parks, near human settlements,

Taxonomy notes

Forms a superspecies with Thraupis episcopus. It is not clear whether populations of Thraupis sayaca and Thraupis episcopus interbreed in the zone of contact. The vocalizations might be sufficiently different to represent a barrier for interbreeding (¹³³).
