17-18 cm. Endemic to Southeast Brazil. Head and underparts dark glittering bluish violet, brighter on crown. Back blackish with bluish sheen. Bright yellow shoulder patch. Wing coverts and flight feathers with greenish edges. <NThe female is very similar, duller, with the back and underparts dark gray. <NImmature grayish. Call a high upward pitched "siii". Song in structure and sound quality similar to the song of /Thraupis cyanoptera , a 3-4 sec long sequence of about 10 whistles often repeated several times. Forages in pairs breeding season or in small groups in canopy and mid level of trees, also visits fruiting shrubs. Seldom in mixed flocks: migratory: leaves the mountains in winter and descends to the lowlands. Breeds in October.
