18 cm. Larger than /Thraupis sayaca with a heavier bill. Back grayish blue. Wing and edging of flight feathers and rims of tail feathers deep violet blue. Underside whitish blue with a greenish tinge on the sides of the body. Belly and crissum buff white-yellow. <NSubadults different from /Thraupis sayaca by signs of violet blue on shoulders and buffier underparts ^159 . <NThe best way to identify this species is the combination of the thick bill and dark lores which are absent in other blue /Thraupis species ^160 . Call similar to other /Thraupis tanagers, a high "seee . Song a beautiful melodical warble circumscribed as "look here, right here, drink-drink jrrr , 8-10 sec, repeated several times ^159 . The "here" is a long whistle. Variations of the song are heard on vocalizations 1-5. Forages for fruit high up in the canopy of tall trees, also in the canopy of smaller trees of secondary growth.
