15 cm. Very long billed for a wren. Rufous brown above, the wings and tail with blackish barring. Cheeks white with brown stripes. Underside white. Performs duets consisting of short flute-like phrases repeated several times which change then to another phrase type as exemplified in the vocalizations 1, 2, 5, and 6. Common also is the "chi-to-to" call vocalization 4 . Also a descending rough "weea" as in vocalization 3. Forages low in dense vegetation. Common breeder in Southeast Brazil. September-January, nest domed with downward sloping entrance ^142 . Quite common in thickets at forest borders and shrubby, swampy locations, restinga, coastal thickets etc. Not within high forest. Throughout, most common in the littoral zone, to about 900 meters ^133 . Rarer away from the coast. Quite similar to /Thryothorus leucotis which occurs in Northern Estado Sao Paulo, but whose distribution does not approach the area covered by this CD-ROM. /Thryothorus longirostris and /Thryothorus leucotis could be conspecific, because of the existence of intermediate specimens in southern Piaui ^133 . 8482 Iguape, 10<10>20<10>94, cloudy, 28<91>C.
