Description

15 cm. Very long billed for a wren. Rufous brown above, the wings and tail with blackish barring. Cheeks white with brown stripes. Underside white.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Performs duets consisting of short flute-like phrases repeated several times which change then to another phrase type as exemplified in the vocalizations # 1, 2, 5, and 6. Common also is the 'chi-to-to' call (vocalization # 4). Also a descending rough 'weea' as in vocalization # 3.

Behavior

Forages low in dense vegetation.

Breeding

Common breeder in Southeast Brazil. September-January, nest domed with downward sloping entrance (¹⁴²).

Habitat and status

Quite common in thickets at forest borders and shrubby, swampy locations, restinga, coastal thickets etc. Not within high forest.

Distribution

Throughout, most common in the littoral zone, to about 900 meters (¹³³). Rarer away from the coast.

Taxonomy notes

Quite similar to Thryothorus leucotis which occurs in Northern Estado Sao Paulo, but whose distribution does not approach the area covered by this CD-ROM. Thryothorus longirostris and Thryothorus leucotis could be conspecific, because of the existence of intermediate specimens in southern Piaui (¹³³).
