Hellmayr's Pipit

14.5 cm. A big pipit streaked blackish above on a beige brown background. Grayish tail with white outer tail feathers. Below whitish. Throat buff-whitish, unstriped. A band of fine, scant black streaking on buff background across the breast. In worn plumage is more grayish and the outer tail feathers are browner ^133 . Legs pink. <N/Anthus correndera is much bolder streaked on the back. Song vocalization 3 a repetition of simple single syllables | "zilip - zilip -zilip.." or ziu -zilip-zi-zilip..." The song is mostly delivered from a perch, but also in flight. Forages for insects on the ground. Breeds in Southeast Brazil. We found a pair feeding pulli at a nest under a clump of grass in the Serra Mantiqueira at 1700 meters on November 17th, 1998. November-January. Rare in Estado S<C4>o Paulo in the mountains above the tree line in pastures and on dry grassy and rocky slopes. Regularly seen and heard on the mountain tops close to<8E>Campos do Jord<C4>o e.g. on the road to S<C4>o Jose dos Alpes and in the high country of the<8E>Serra Mantiqueira<8E>.
