Brown-crested Flycatcher

18 cm. Bill black with almost no flesh color on the base of the lower mandible. Otherwise similar to /Myiarchus swainsoni , but with the primaries clearly edged rufous-brown and the inner webs of tail feathers rufous visible from below . Throat and chest pale gray. Belly pale yellow. Typical call is a repeated "pip....pip.....pip......" quite unlike the calls of the other Myiarchus. Perches rather low in the open in tall trees and high scrub and is mainly involved in hover gleaning, especially in upward-hover gleaning and less so in sally gleaning. A common Myiarchus of more arid regions. Regular in dryer regions of the interior, gallery forests, cerrad<C4>o, cerrado, scrub and lighter, more open woodland. Scarce in the Serra do Mar ^15 . In estado S<C4>o Paulo mostly inland, e.g. near<8E>Rio Claro ^40 . Might occur closer to the shore in suitable habitat. Below 1800 meters ^44 . 1063 Call. Pirapora, 11<10>13<10>98. Sunny, 30<91>C.
