21 cm. Larger than /Attila phoenicurus with a long and strong bill. The whole head is slaty gray with whitish streaks on the throat. Back reddish rusty. Rump and tail cinnamon rufous. Wings rufous with black primaries. Breast orange buff, the belly more yellow. Most common call is a loud "wi wi wi wi wi TI pu" or "wi wi wi wi wi wi TI TI pu" with emphasis on the next to last syllable, the wi whistles slowly increasing in pitch cut 2 . Also a quick "wiwiwiwiwiwiwiwiwi" on the same pitch cuts 1, 3, 4 and 5 . Alarm call is a high fast rattle "tiktiktiktiktiktiktiktiktik" cut 6 , also a hard "trk...trk...". Forages in the sub-canopy of forest and engages in outward-hover-gleaning, sallying from perches within the canopy and fruit eating. /Attila spadiceus , a closely related species, builds a cup nest of a four-attachment-points design ^106 . Common in the middle statum of mature secondary and of primary rain forest and forest border. Frequently well hidden within the foliage and sometimes remarkably difficult to see. Throughout.
