Description

18 cm. Head dark slate-gray. Otherwise rusty-brown above including the tail. Wings dusky-brown. Below rusty yellow, washed rufous on the breast.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The call of this Attila is typical of the Atlantic Forest region. The common far carrying call is a loud 'whi-WHIwhiwhi' with emphasis on the second syllable. Also a soft ' piiuuu....piiuu...' (cut #6).

Behavior

Forages in the middle stratum and interior of canopy of large trees. According to Fitzpatrick an outward-hover gleaner. It also regularly eats fruit.

Habitat and status

Regularly encountered and in some places common (PE Jacupiranga, Itatiaia) in the canopy of humid primary and mature secondary forest. In contrast to Ridgely (⁴⁴) this species does not seem to be associated particularly with Araucaria forest.

Distribution

Throughout. The Serra dos Orgãos, Serra Mantiqueira, the whole Serra do Mar, Fazenda Intervales to PE Jacupiranga in the South. Not below 400 meters, to about 1900 meters in the Serra Mantiqueira.
