The account

Description

12 cm. Very similar to Phylloscartes ventralis, but with a bright yellow superciliary stripe, yellow cheeks and throat. Bill black, the base of the lower mandible pale. Above bright olive-green. Below no buff wash on belly and with olive mottling. Wings dusky-black with two yellow wing bars.

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The distinct call is 'fee see' or 'plea', quite different from the sharp 'tik' of Phylloscartes ventralis. Song is twittering and rapid, described by E. O. Willis as 'sit-it-it-it-it-it-it-it-it-it-sitit-sitit'.

Behavior

Forages 1-3 meters from the ground in scrubby restinga frequently flying back and forth to other parts of the forest.

Breeding

An oven-shaped nest with a side entrance (see picture # 3) was found in swampy restinga near Barra do Ribeira, São Paulo state on October 23, 1994 (⁹⁸). The adults remained close to the nest which contained two young.

Habitat and status

Rare in dense coastal sand-ridge forest (restinga), often in swampy areas with standing water. This species is listed as 'vulnerable', because it only has a small population which is threatened by habitat loss (¹⁰³).

Distribution

In São Paulo state found on the Ilha Comprida, Iguape, Cananeia, Ilha do Cardoso, and in Jureia south of Peruibe. Also near Barra do Ribeira and in the lower Ribeira valley. Found along the coast south to Joinville, Santa Catarina. Sea level.

Taxonomy notes

This distinct form belonging to the Phylloscartes ventralis superspecies was described in 1992 from the restinga of southern São Paulo state (⁹⁷). For more information see ¹⁸⁰
