Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet

12 cm. Greenish overall. Long tailed and gnatcatcher-like. Above bright olive-green with a white superciliary stripe and eye ring. Grayish mottling of cheeks and dark grey stripe through eye. Dark gray wings with two yellowish wing bands and margins of the flight feathers. Throat white. Below pale whitish-yellow, the breast washed with buffy green. Song is a "tik-tik-chichichichichichi", not descending in pitch like the song of /Phyllomyias virescens which occasionally occurs in the same habitat, but becoming more emphasized and somewhat slower toward the end cut 1 . Calls, a hard "chik" or "chipit". Similar vocalizations are described in Clay ^14 . Forages by rapidly moving about in the canopy of humid forest and crowns of scattered trees at woodland borders. Prey is captured mainly by rapid upward striking from a location underneath the prey ^74 . Not uncommon in the canopy of humid secondary and primary forest and borders in the highlands. Also sometimes in lower scrub and in the crowns of free standing trees. Throughout Serra do Mar, Serra Mantiqueira, Serra dos Org<C4>os .
