The account

Description

13 cm. A small green elaenia of inland forests. Olive-green above with a lighter superciliary and a yellow coronal stripe. Wings and tail a darker greenish-olive, the wings without distinct wing bars. Throat grayish. Breast olive-gray. Belly yellow.

(The female Myiopagis caniceps has strong whitish-yellow wing bars.)

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Call is a slurred 'zu-i' or 'cheerip' (⁴⁴), see cut #2. Cut #1 is also characterisitic, a variation of the first call, but lower in pitch, like 'zei-do.... zidli zidli.... zeido'. Dawn song is a sqeaky whistle repeated consistently 'tsibit-TSEE-tsigheh' (³⁰) maybe similar to cut #1. See also ³⁸.

Behavior

Usually well into the interior of the forest canopy. Posture usually elaenia-like vertical. An upward-hover gleaner and perch gleaner (⁷⁴).

Habitat and status

Fairly common, but inconspicuous in the canopy of dry woodlands, forest borders and gallery forest.

Distribution

Mostly extralimital. In the drier interior forests. Does not occur at the coast or in the Serra Mantiqueira. Pinto reports this species from the northern part of Estado São Paulo (e. g. from Bebedouro, Porto Cabral, Lins, Avanhandava). Forrester notes it as accidental in the Serra Mantiqueira. Found near Rio Claro and probably closer to the coast in suitable habitat.
