The account

Description

12 cm. Not separable in the field from Neopelma chrysolophum. The nape is slightly more gray and some individuals do not have the yellow coronal patch. However its primary lowland forest habitat clearly defines this species (N. chrysolophum is only found in highland forest and scrub).

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song is a four-syllable strophe sounding like 'wo-di-wo-de' and variations, with the emphasis on the last syllable. The high similarity of these repetitions of the song is reminiscent of the vocalizations of Tyrranneutes stolzmanni to which this species is supposedly related (⁹³).

Behavior

Stays in the middle stratum of dense forest interior. Forages with short range (less than 1.5 meters) sally-hovers to take fruit (⁹³).

Breeding

A nest possibly belonging to this species was described as a bag with a side entrance (²⁹).

Habitat and status

The Northern lowland Tyrant-Manakin. In Rio de Janeiro rare in the interior and edges of primary or mature secondary humid forest. In Rio Doçe State Park, M.G. an individual sang 3 meters above ground in dense primary rainforest with some undergrowth (Oct. 2000). In light of the scarcity of suitable habitat this species is considered to be 'endangered' (¹⁰³).

Distribution

In Rio de Janeiro State presently only known from near Anil(approximately 2231, 4240) northeast of the city of Rio de Janeiro at 100 meters, (⁹³). More common in Espirito Santo, Minas Gerais and southern Bahia.

Taxonomy notes

On the basis of several different criteria Whitney at al. consider this form to be a species more closely related to Tyranneutes and only superficially similar to Neopelma chrysolophum (⁹³).
