14 cm. Large and long-tailed. The male is black with a bright red frontal crest, upper part of head, nape and upper part of back. <NThe female is olive-green. Grayer below. Crest very short. Song remotely resembling in structure that of /Schiffornis virescens , is a repeated "tididit tui tui". Also a wui wui wui.... . Ridgely mentions a "wreee pur" ^44 . Usually motionless perched in the interior of thickets and trees. Eats fruits. Not uncommon in the middle and low stratum of dense gallery forest, and swampy woodlots. Mostly in the interior. Recorded in S<C4>o Paulo State from the north and from<8E>Campinas ^30 . Might occur closer to the coast in suitable habitat. 500-1000 meters ^30 . 11618 Song. Serra da Canastra, 11<10>12<10>98.
