How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

The stereotypic song is a frequently repeated 'tiuu..to..towee..towee' or 'tiuu..to..towee'. I noted various song types:

1. ' tiu...witu', 'tiu..witsiwi'.

2. 'tiu...widiwi...tiu.'

3. 'tsiu...wi...tsiu..widiwidiwidiwidi..'

Behavior

These birds seem to have well defined locations in their territories from which they sing because they can be found singing day after day at the same sites. Foraging in the middle and upper stratum of trees. Frugivorous.

Breeding

Nest is a bulky cup situated on top of a tree-stump or close to a trunk (⁴⁴).

Habitat and status

Common, but sometimes local, in humid primary and mature secondary forest, especially close to clearings, and forest borders. Also in open disturbed wooded or brushy areas and gallery forest. It seems to be more common at middle altitudes.

Throughout the area. Up to 1200 meters (⁴⁴).

The systematic position of Schiffornis seems to be between the true manakins and the tyrant flycatchers (⁹¹).
