8 cm. The smallest cotinga. Bright olive-green above with an orange crown stripe bordered by black. Front and rump yellow. Wings dusky-black with two white wing bars and white tips on the tertials. Below yellow with an olive wash on the chest.
Described by Descourtilz as brief, sharp and disagreeable ^94 .
In 1996 a pair of this species was sitting on top of medium sized trees.
Rediscovered after more than 100 years on October 27, 1996, by Richardo Parrini about 5 km south of Teresopolis on the road to Rio de Janeiro. In the following days it was observed by several other ornithologists from Rio de Janeiro ^95 . The location is at 800 meters and close to a road going off to the east on the highway close to the gas station called Posto Garraf<C4>o in the forested foothills of the Serra dos Org<C4>os. However it has not been seen there since. In the middle stratum of primary forest and thick secondary growth of abandoned clearings ^94 . This species qualifies as "critical", because of its tiny population ^103 .
The original specimen was collected in the vicinity of<8E>Rio de Janeiro. Also near <8E>Cantagalo<8E>and<8E>Nova Friburgo<8E>in Rio de Janeiro State ^40 . 750-1500 meters ^94 . <NOn March 4, 2006 an individual of /Calyptura cristata was observed in a mixed tanager flock at Folha Seca NW of <8E>Ubatuba. The bird was observed by Dr. Martin Schaefer, University of Freiburg, Germany
