14 cm. Male is similar to the male of /Myrmeciza squamosa , but with a wide white superciliary stripe and buff spots instead of white spots on the wing coverts. Sides of head and upper throat black and a diagnostic white bib below the upper throat extending onto the neck. Upper chest black, the feathers rimmed with white giving it a scaly appearance. Belly white. <NFemale is like the male, but from chin to crissum ochraceous-buff to whitish buff. Flanks light brown.
Call is a series of "zick" sounds identical to those of /Myrmeciza squamosa . The song is also similar to that of squamosa but missing the two-syllable effect of the song of that species, more like a fast "si-si-si-si-si-si-si" cut 2 .
Hops on the ground or climbs close to the ground in the interior of dense forest.
Locally common in the shady interior of secondary and primary rain forest.
From<8E>Serra Mantiqueira<8E>and<8E>Serra dos Org<C4>os<8E>northeast into Estado S<C4>o Paulo and s. Bahia. There may be some overlap of loricata with squamosa in s. Estado Rio de Janeiro and northeast Estado S<C4>o Paulo. e.g. at<8E>Serra Bocaina<8E>, but apparently no intergradation occurs . From 700-1300 meters.
