14 cm. Crown brownish with a long white superciliary. Legs pink. Male is chocolate-brown above with a blackish spot and a semiconcealed white spot on the back. Wing coverts black, the feathers tipped white forming bars. The flight feathers are black with rusty margins. Face and throat black. Breast feathers black with broad white tips yielding a scaly effect of the underside. Upper chest below the black throat is lightest. Flanks and crissum rusty-beige. Tail brown. <NFemale is like the male, but only the broad eye-stripe is black. The rest of face and throat are white. Call a high fast sequence of "zick" notes "zikzikzikzikzikzik . Song a high, fast and two-syllabled "wiisi wiisi wiisi wiise wiise". Female"s song is shriller and higher pitched ^44 . On or close the ground in humid forest, walking, hopping and climbing about. Not in bird parties. Common in the interior of dense and shady secondary and primary rain forest.
