12 cm. The male is similar to /Drymophila genei , with a black cap and eye-stripe and a white superciliary stripe, but the back is olive-gray. Wings black with no rufous in the flight feathers. Below white, boldly streaked black. Flanks, belly and crissum rufous. Tail black with white tips. <NFemale"s back is brown. Below beige with much stronger black streaks than the female /Drymophila genei . Crissum and flanks rusty-brown. Song rough tripartite "zji jeeeee-i" or, "zji zje zje zje" less squeaky than the song of /Drymophila genei : sometimes followed by a descending "jew jew jew jew". Call a rasping "zerrrr", a fast "zwi-zizizizizizizizi" track 4 or a fast "twitwitwitiwiwiwiwiwi". Low in scrub and often difficult to see. Frequently in pairs. A montane Drymophila antbird endemic to southeast Brazil. Quite common in middle altitude forest and borders. Also in degraded scrubby areas at higher altitudes.
