13 cm. Male"s crown and neck are black with white striping on the neck. A black eye-stripe black and a white superciliary stripe. Cheeks grizzled black and white. Back brown with black stripes. Wings blackish with 2 white wing bars, the primaries, secondaries and tertiaries chestnut-brown. Rump and tail reddish-brown. Below whitish, breast scaled blackish, olive-brown on flanks and crissum. <NFemale is olive-brown above, the head streaked with black and with a buffy superciliary. Wings, rump and tail chestnut-brown. Below buffy whitish mostly unmarked. Song is a squeaking "piz zizz zizz zizz zizz je jew jew jew". An alternate simpler song is "zi zi zi zi zi" cut 3 . Call is a piercing, descending and repeated "zieh" and a rough, rasping "zeee" or "shreee" track 6 .
