The account

Description

14 cm. Very similar to Drymophila ferruginea but with a distinctly longer dark brown or grayish tail and generally paler.

Male is pale orange underneath, brownish-buff remiges. The impression of the back is rustier than the back of ferruginea due to the buff-orange edgings of the upper back feathers.

Female rather pale buff. Brownish-buff forehead with pale streaks.

Where it was recorded

How the map was made

The original program computed each red dot at display time from the locality's coordinates, using its map library and one of five base maps drawn for the screen widths of the day. That library's projection — an oblique rotation of the sphere about the map's own centre, 23.7°S 47.4°W — was read from the program and checked against the graticule the same program drew into the base maps: it reproduces every grid intersection to within about a pixel. The dots here use that projection on the 1280-pixel base map, with the coordinates the discs record. Nothing was placed by hand, no modern map data was used, and a place whose coordinate is incomplete, out of range or beyond the map's edge is listed rather than guessed.

The discs carried location maps only; none shows a distribution or range.

Voice

Song a rasping and descending 'zheip zheop zheup zhoop zhaaieet' and variations thereof. Female song is faster. Call a rough 'zerrr zerrr zerrr'. Willis describes it as 'raaj raaj raaj..'.

Behavior

Forages 1-15 meters in thickets and bamboo, often inspecting dead leaves.

Bamboo thickets of montane forest.

Distribution

Throughout. Occurs usually at higher elevations than Drymophila ferruginea. 800-1800 meters; at lower elevations in the south.

Taxonomy notes

This montane and southern form was separated from Drymophila ferruginea on differences in morphology and vocalizations. (⁶⁶). The two species can occur together at 800-1200 meters (see voice cut # 2).
