14 cm. Very similar to /Drymophila ferruginea but with a distinctly longer dark brown or grayish tail and generally paler. <NMale is pale orange underneath, brownish-buff remiges. The impression of the back is rustier than the back of ferruginea due to the buff-orange edgings of the upper back feathers. <NFemale rather pale buff. Brownish-buff forehead with pale streaks. Song a rasping and descending "zheip zheop zheup zhoop zhaaieet" and variations thereof. Female song is faster. Call a rough "zerrr zerrr zerrr". Willis describes it as "raaj raaj raaj..". Forages 1-15 meters in thickets and bamboo, often inspecting dead leaves. Bamboo thickets of montane forest. Throughout. Occurs usually at higher elevations than /Drymophila ferruginea . 800-1800 meters: at lower elevations in the south. This montane and southern form was separated from /Drymophila ferruginea on differences in morphology and vocalizations. ^66 .
