The impression of the back is rustier than the back of ferruginea due to the buff-orange edgings of the upper back feathers. <NFemale rather pale buff. Brownish-buff forehead with pale streaks. Song a rasping and descending "zheip zheop zheup zhoop zhaaieet" and variations thereof. Female song is faster. Call a rough "zerrr zerrr zerrr". Willis describes it as "raaj raaj raaj..".
