13 cm. Male has the crown and sides of head blackish and a white superciliary stripe. Back dark brown with black spots and a white dorsal patch frequently not visible . Chestnut rump. Wings black with two white bars. Below bright orange ferruginous-brown. Tail long and black with white tips. <NFemale is duller. Crown streaked olive-gray. Tail grayer The common call or song is a repeated "di-tui". Calls a high descending "zieh zieh": a high rattle "zkzkzkzkzkzkzk" and a downward "ziu ziu". Forages within 10 feet from the ground in scrub and forest borders. Not usually in mixed flocks. Common in dense humid scrub and understory of primary and secondary forest. Prefers forest borders and bamboo thickets. Throughout. Common at the coast. Sea level to 1200 meters at<8E>Itatiaia<8E>.
